Banaras, the holy city of India is widely popular as Varanasi.Banaras is known as the oldest living city in the world. Banaras city is the culture capital of India. This Banars place became the center for fairs and festivals by virtue of their cultural and religious importance. Festivals are celebrated almost every month. The celebration symbolizes life at its best with the dedication of Banaras beliefs. It is the holiest city in Hinduismand has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of years. The city is presided over by the god Shiva, and rests on the banks of the Ganges River.

The importance site in Varanasi is the shrine of Lord Kashi Vishwanath. It is the holiest shrine in the city, and is one of twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. These are shrines where peopleworship Shiva in the form of "lingam of light". The original shrine was destroyed, but this is a reconstruction built in 1780. Its culture is greatly associated with the river's religious traditions. It has been the symbol for Hindu renaissance and devotion to the gods. People believed that the Ganges River has the power to wash away the sins of mortals. Many festivals are celebrated in high spirits. A huge number of foreigners visit the place in order to witness the significance of each fair.

बनारस के बारे में कुछ बातें ऐसी हैं जो इसको निराला बनती हैं और यहाँ को लोगों को इसका दीवाना,शिव नगरी और धर्म नगरी कहलाने वाली इस नगरी में हर जगह अनेको मंदिर,मस्जिद,चर्च और गुरूद्वारे मिलेंगे !यहाँ का हर व्यक्ति चाहे वो किसी भी धर्म के हो ,"हर-हर" बोलने पर दोनों हाथ उठा कर महादेव जरूर बोलेंगे ! सडको पर जाम है,शोर है,भीड़ है,फिर भी सब अपना रास्ता बना के आगे बढ़ना जानते हैं !दुनिया का एकमात्र शहर है जहाँ इतने सारे अलग- अलग त्यौहार पूरे धूम धाम से मनाये जाते हैं फिर चाहे वो होली,दिवाली,दुर्गापूजा,छठ,खिचड़ी,ईद,शिवरात्रि,क्रिसमस या फिर मुहर्रम हो !यहाँ के खाने में ऐसी अनोखी चीजें हैं जो सिर्फ यहीं मिलती हैं,मुझे नहीं लगता की दुनिया की किसी और शहर में आप को लौंगलता या बाबा का Slice मिलेगा !गंगा की अविरल धारा और इतने खूबसूरत घाट भी आपको सिर्फ यहीं मिलेंगे !हमेशा पान घुलाये रखना,दिन में ठंडाई और शाम को भांग छानना यहाँ के चरित्र में निहित है !राजनीती हो क्रिकेट या विश्व की कोई भी बड़ी से बड़ी समस्या...समाधान आपको नुक्कड़ के चाय वाले के यहाँ जमघट में ही मिलेगा !सुबह के नाश्ते का बिज़नस कितना बड़ा है इसका अंदाज़ा आप इस बात से लगा सकते हैं की एक पूरी गली का नाम ही कचौरी-गली है !यही एक ऐसा शहर है जहाँ लोग आकर मरना चाहते हैं!

Varanasi, one of world's oldest living cities, is rightly called the religious capital of India. Also known as Banaras or Benaras, this holy city is located in the southeastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It rests on the left bank of the holy river Ganga (Ganges), and is one of the seven sacred spots for Hindus. Every devout Hindu hopes to visit the city at least once in a lifetime, take a holy dip at the famous 'Ghats' of the Ganga, walk the pious Panchakosi road that bounds the city, and, if God wills, die here in old age.
